Aphid Control:

Aphids feed on the sap of plants. This constant attacking on the plants can actually destroy the plant. Aphids are often seen in large numbers attacking younger plants causing shoots to become weak. 

Aphids are part of the ‘Aphidoidae’ family group and are approximately 1-10mm and soft bodied. They tend to be wingless insects and they process proboscis which orginates around the forelegs. Its antennae has two thick basal segments and a flagellum consisting of 4 parts. 

During this year ‘Cypress Aphids’ are found to be feeding on leylandii sap, turning the leaves brown and killing off the plant completely. Cypress Aphids have been on the increase in Britain but not much is actually known about them.

The aphid is more of a common pest in warmer climates and is a real nuisance around the Mediterranean. They are often found in greenhouses in the UK but number are increasing outside in gardens. 

Aphid treatment consists of either spraying insecticide onto plants or the use of aphid traps. Aphid insect killing spray (Aquablast) is easy to use and comes in a 1ltr bottle. Its concentrate Pyrethrum 5EC is also available and it dilutes down and is ideal for larger areas. Aphid traps are ideal for glass houses/ indoor use.
