Grey squirrels build nests (dreys) of twigs and leaves in the forks of trees and they may also use tree hollows known as dens. There are two breeding seasons in a year. The first litters are born in February and March after a gestation period of 45 days. Second litters are born in June and July and leave the nest in August and September. Litters average 3 to 4 young. The life span of females is typically between 4 and 6 years, for males it is between 2 and 3 years.
Their average density is approximately 5 per acre and they live in any area which is covered by trees. Grey squirrels will live in urban parks and gardens and they can become very tame creatures.
Grey squirrels will eat a wide range of items from nuts, fruit buds and shoots to fungi, birds’ eggs and nestings.
